Diop Diadji (Senegal)
Born in Senegal, in 1973. Lives and works in Paris.
Dakar-born Diadji Diop settled in France in 1994, with goals of becoming a cartoonist. In preparatory class, he discovered the multiple potentialities of sculpture and decides to change paths. His passion for cartoons and cinema will still nurture his work, whether through the realistic aspect of his sculptures or through his narrative-sized installations.
In 1995, he joined the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and successively worked in the Bruno Lebel and Richard Deacon’s workshops. He then graduated with honours in 2001 and took part in the exhibition Félicités the following year. Since then, he featured exhibitions at the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery, la Villette, the Dakar Biennial and the Visual Art Festival of Abidjan.
His work questions identity, exile and violence. He values realistic forms, challenges human relationships and reveals painful inner developments without ever falling into pathos while using humour, strength and derision from time to time. Diadji diop calls for dialogue and sharing without preconceptions and beyond the human skin color, beyond any border and barrier of any kind.
